Woman's body found in bin bag at Stanley Park, Liverpool — murder probe launched

A woman's body was discovered in a black bin bag in the walled garden of Stanley Park, Anfield. Police believe she may have lain there for several weeks.

The body of a woman was discovered inside a black bin bag in the walled garden area of Stanley Park, Anfield, Liverpool, the Daily Express reports. Merseyside Police confirmed the find came after a member of the public contacted officers at around 5.25pm on Friday, 28 August.

The woman is described as white, in her 70s, approximately 5ft 2in tall, of small build, with strawberry-blonde hair. She was wearing a distinctive cerise pink Nike T-shirt when found. Police have so far been unable to establish her identity.

Detective Superintendent Rachel Wilson, speaking at a press conference, said a post-mortem was carried out on Saturday, 29 August, but the results have been withheld for operational reasons. "When we are able to share the details, we will," Wilson said.

Investigators believe the woman's body may have been at the location for a number of weeks. "Forensic work relating to this continues, as do other lines of enquiry," Wilson added. House-to-house visits, CCTV checks and witness appeals are being carried out as a matter of urgency.

Missing persons reports in Merseyside and beyond have been cross-referenced with the victim's description, but none has led to a positive identification. Wilson appealed directly to the public: "I want to take the opportunity to ask people to please consider whether you have any neighbours, family members or friends who live in the area — someone you may not have seen or heard from for a few weeks."

She noted that some individuals disappear without those close to them being immediately aware, due to planned holidays or simple misunderstandings, meaning no formal concern may have been reported.

Assistant Chief Constable Andy Ryan highlighted the significance of the park's location. "Stanley Park is well known as being the park that separates the Anfield and Goodison Park football stadiums," he said. "It is a very busy and popular green space, especially in the recent summer weeks — visited by dog walkers and families, as well as people walking, playing and exercising." Ryan said the park's footfall meant someone may have seen something in recent weeks that could prove crucial to the investigation.
