Apex man arrested over fatal freeway hit-and-run, told troopers he had hit a deer
Julien Joseph, 48, of Apex, was taken into custody on Tuesday — more than a week after a vehicle struck and killed 37-year-old Rakesh Babu Poojari on the Durham Freeway, wral.com reports.
Poojari had pulled onto the shoulder of the freeway near Fayetteville Street to change a flat tyre when he was hit at around 10 p.m. on 25 October. Durham police charged Joseph with felony hit-and-run in connection with his death.
Investigators recovered a Nissan emblem at the scene and began searching for a Nissan sedan or small SUV with front-end damage. Joseph's Nissan Altima showed, according to the arrest report, significant damage to the front, hood and windshield.
After the collision, Joseph drove approximately 12 more miles before calling his wife, then contacted 911. He initially told state troopers he had struck a deer.
Joseph posted a $100,000 bond on Tuesday and is next due in court on 14 January 2027.
