A Chicago man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to the murder of nine-year-old Serabi Medina, according to abc7chicago.com.

Michael Goodman accepted a plea deal admitting he killed the child in 2023 in the Portage Park neighbourhood. A judge handed down the sentence on Thursday, to be served at 100% with no possibility of parole, the victim's family confirmed following the court hearing.

The shooting took place in the 3500 block of North Long Avenue at approximately 9:40 p.m., just minutes after Medina had bought ice cream with her father from a nearby ice cream truck.

Prosecutors said Medina's father was talking to friends inside a car when a gunshot was heard. He told his daughter to go home. At that point, Goodman — known to police — walked out of his apartment building with a handgun, approached the group, and shot Medina in the head on the pavement outside her home.

Medina's mother, Blanca Miranda, 29, had been shot and killed in 2018. Neighbours told reporters the family had moved to their Portage Park apartment shortly after her death.

Goodman will serve the full 40-year term with no chance of early release.
