Shooting at Des Moines post office leaves three injured, one suspect held

A suspect was taken into custody in Des Moines, Iowa, on Thursday after two people were shot on the second floor of the city's main post office and a third was hurt while attempting to flee the building, ktiv.com reports. Police said none of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening.

"They're all at the hospital, they are being cared for right now," said Sgt. Paul Parizek of the Des Moines Police Department.

Officers arrived within three minutes after reports of shots fired came in at approximately 9:10 a.m. local time. The post office, located just north of downtown Des Moines and across the street from one of the city's main hospitals, is a four-story regional sorting facility with a public walk-in service counter.

Parizek described how the suspect was identified: "The suspected shooter that got detained, somebody pointed him out to us as leaving the building going that direction. There were officers obviously saturating this area. They were able to do that without incident."

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds said she was in contact with the Department of Public Safety. "The suspected shooter is in custody and the investigation is ongoing," she posted online. "We are monitoring the situation and our prayers are with everyone involved. Grateful for the immediate response by law enforcement."

Des Moines Public Schools said it was notified by police at 9:20 a.m. and placed a nearby elementary school, welcome centre and nutrition centre into secure status — meaning no entry or exit was permitted. The secure status was lifted at 10 a.m. after police confirmed a suspect was in custody.
