Armed standoff in Salt Lake City's Yalecrest area prompts shelter-in-place order

Shots fired from barricaded home in Salt Lake City's Yalecrest neighbourhood

Salt Lake City police ordered residents in part of the Yalecrest neighbourhood to shelter in place on Friday night, 6 November, while officers negotiated with a man barricaded inside a home near 900 S. 1900 East, sltrib.com reports.

The standoff began after calls were received about a man making threats of violence. "When officers arrived shots were fired from inside the home," the police department said in a post on X.

A video circulated among neighbours captured an officer urging the man to come out. "We want to talk to you, figure out what's going on," the officer said, asking the man to walk toward police with his hands raised.

Around 7 p.m., officers at the scene said they were not aware of anyone else inside the home. The department had been in contact with the man earlier in the day but had not had phone contact with him for some time.

Shortly before 8 p.m., Salt Lake City police posted a second update on X stating that officers were "continuing efforts to negotiate a peaceful surrender." The shelter-in-place order remained in effect along with road closures in the surrounding area.

The department said it would continue to post updates as more information became available.
