Officer opens fire on knife-wielding suspect near Ashland's A Street

An Ashland police officer shot a man early Monday near downtown after responding to a business alarm, opb.org reports, citing the Ashland Police Department.

Officers arriving on the scene found the man leaving an area in the 200 block of A Street where multiple storefront windows had been shattered. The man allegedly advanced on officers with a knife, at which point one officer discharged his weapon.

The suspect was transported to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center. Neither he nor the officer involved has been publicly identified. Ashland Police Chief Tighe O'Meara told Ashland.news the man was white and in his 30s.

Broken glass and caution tape were still visible at the scene on Monday morning. Among the businesses with damaged windows were Masala Bistro & Bar and A Street Print and Parcel.

Jackson County District Attorney Patrick Green confirmed that his office will present the investigation's findings to a grand jury, describing the step as standard practice following police shootings. Further details are expected later in the week.

The incident occurred near a memorial marking the spot where Ashland resident Matthew Vandersande was shot and killed in his parked vehicle in September 2025. That murder investigation remains ongoing.
