Suspect held in Mexico after infant found dead on Monterey County road

Sergio Galvez Perez, a California man suspected of sexually abusing and impregnating his 14-year-old daughter, was arrested in Mexico on Sunday, cbsnews.com reports. His daughter, Diana Galvez Ortega, was safely rescued during the same operation carried out by Mexican law enforcement.

Perez faces charges including incest, lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14, lewd acts with a minor, unlawful sexual intercourse, child concealment, and child endangerment, according to the Monterey County Sheriff's Office.

Monterey County Sheriff Tina Nieto said Perez was found in possession of narcotics at the time of his arrest. "Mexican authorities are aware of the pending charges against him in Monterey County for crimes committed against Diana. Diana is safe and is currently in the care of local authorities in Mexico," Nieto said.

The investigation began on 1 August, when the remains of an infant were discovered on the side of a Monterey County road. Investigators subsequently identified Perez and the teenage girl as persons of interest in connection with the infant's death.

The Monterey County District Attorney's Office clarified that no charging decision had been made against the 14-year-old girl, despite earlier reports suggesting she held a warrant. "We recognise that the 14-year-old is a victim of her father's abuse. No child should ever have to endure such horrific circumstances," the DA's office said in a statement dated 2 September.

The girl's mother, 36-year-old Ofelia Garcia Ortega, was arrested in August on suspicion of child endangerment. She was subsequently released after posting bail.

Nieto said a press conference would be held at a later date to provide further details on the case.
