U.S. Forces Destroy Suspected Drug Vessel in Caribbean, Killing Four
American troops operating in the Caribbean Sea destroyed a high-speed boat believed to be carrying narcotics, leaving four individuals dead, according to a Sunday statement from U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM).
Footage released by the command shows a projectile slamming into the moving craft, which is immediately engulfed by a massive fireball. SOUTHCOM said the strike relied on verified intelligence indicating the vessel was actively involved in drug trafficking. Independent confirmation of that assertion remains unavailable.
The attack follows directives from President Donald Trump authorizing repeated military action against suspected smuggling boats in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific. Officials claim these vessels transport illegal drugs toward the United States.
Pentagon representatives frequently refer to those killed in such raids as narcoterrorists. Washington says its Operation Southern Spear has hit dozens of craft and killed more than 200 people to date.
Critics have raised legal questions about whether lethal force in international waters complies with international law. A U.S. official recently claimed military pressure has cut Caribbean drug trafficking by roughly two-thirds, though that figure has not been independently verified either.
