Fatal shooting in Chicago's Loop kills one, injures second man

One dead, one wounded after gunfire erupts near Chicago Theatre

NBC Chicago reports that a fatal shooting unfolded in the early hours of Wednesday morning in the Loop neighbourhood, just steps from the Chicago Theatre on East Lake Street.

Chicago police said two men were discovered at approximately 2:39 a.m. in the 0–100 block of East Lake Street, both suffering gunshot wounds. One of the men was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The second victim, a 38-year-old man, was shot in the leg and taken to hospital in fair condition, according to police.

No additional injuries were reported. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remained under investigation, police said.

By 6:30 a.m., multiple officers and investigators were still at the scene. Police tape blocked off portions of the street and sidewalk near the intersection of State and Lake Streets, and yellow evidence markers lined parts of the pavement. NBC Chicago reporter Lisa Chavarria noted that the markers typically indicate the locations of shell casings.

Chavarria also reported that the area was growing increasingly busy with commuters and workers heading to offices as the investigation continued.

The shooting occurred two days after a separate incident blocks away, in which two people were injured in a shooting inside a 7-Eleven convenience store.

The investigation is ongoing.
