Mother detained at Port of Miami after three-day Carnival cruise

A 29-year-old Florida woman was arrested upon returning from a three-day Carnival cruise to the Bahamas after police discovered she had left her four children — including a 2-month-old infant — unsupervised in her North Miami Beach apartment, wcyb.com reports.

Nathalie Belizaire faces four counts of child neglect following the September 26 discovery at her apartment. The case came to light after the father of her youngest child spotted what appeared to be a Carnival Cruise Line ticket on Belizaire's social media. When he contacted her, she said the children would stay with their great-grandmother during her absence.

Unconvinced, the father visited the apartment and noticed the television on behind the blinds and heard the children inside. He called 911. North Miami Beach police and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded, and firefighters forced entry into the unit over welfare concerns. All four children were found huddled together in a bathroom. They included the 2-month-old and a 2-year-old.

The children's great-grandmother told investigators that Belizaire had promised to drop them off before leaving town but never did. Belizaire's brother separately told law enforcement he had received a text message asking him to check on the children.

On Monday, September 28, North Miami Beach police and a Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office detective travelled to the Port of Miami. U.S. Customs and Border Protection took Belizaire into custody as she disembarked from the Carnival Conquest and transferred her to North Miami Beach police.

Belizaire declined to make a statement and invoked her right to remain silent, according to the arrest report. She was held on a $10,000 bond. The following day, her public defender filed a written plea of not guilty in Miami-Dade Circuit Court.
