A 16-year-old gunman shot dead three pupils and one teacher at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday. The attacker, who was killed moments later by an armed local resident, had previously attended the same school, local police chief Mike Krantz confirmed on Friday, according to Deník.cz.

The shooting began shortly before 1:00 p.m. local time at Silver Rail Elementary School. Police said the teenager first opened fire on an individual seated in a vehicle near the campus. He then destroyed the lock on a school entrance and forced his way inside.

The violence unfolded in a classroom designated for children with special needs. The suspect, a former special-needs pupil at the school, fired a shotgun fifteen times, killing three children aged five, eight, and eleven, along with one teacher. An armed civilian followed the gunman into the building and fatally shot him before he could cause further harm.

Investigators are still working to determine how the youth obtained the firearm and what drove him to attack. “We may never get the complete answer, but we want it,” Krantz stated.

The incident adds to the long series of deadly school shootings in the United States, events that repeatedly reignite national debate over access to firearms under the Second Amendment.
