Deep Ellum mourns four killed in Halloween night gun violence

Four people were killed and at least 15 injured in three separate shootings across Dallas's Deep Ellum neighbourhood in the early hours of Halloween night, according to 1310kfka.com, which reported on the incident citing local police and ABC News affiliate WFAA.

Dallas Police Chief Daniel C. Comeaux said on Sunday that one suspect had been taken into custody and at least one other remained at large. "The detectives and officers are still trying to put everything together to understand exactly what happened on each scene and to see if anything is related," Comeaux said at a press conference. "At this time, we have no information that they are related, but we're still doing an investigation to try to figure that out at this time."

The first shooting occurred at approximately 12:20 a.m. near the 2600 block of Elm Street. A second shooting followed at around 1:05 a.m. on the 2600 block of Main Street, and a third broke out at about 1:35 a.m. on the 200 block of S. Crowdus Street. Police sources told WFAA that at one of the locations a man allegedly announced he was going to "start shooting" before opening fire — at least three people were killed at that site.

Comeaux cautioned that the injury toll of 15 could rise, as some victims had made their own way to nearby hospitals rather than waiting for emergency services.

Dallas Mayor Eric L. Johnson condemned the violence in a statement, saying it "is always unacceptable in our city." Johnson called on city officials to continue exploring strategies to make Deep Ellum a safe gathering place, adding that the victims and their families were in his thoughts.

Dallas City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert echoed that sentiment and confirmed officers had been on the ground and responded immediately. "Dallas Police will continue to investigate this incident and work to bring those responsible to justice," Tolbert said. "We will share additional information as it becomes available."
