Girl, 12, fatally shot in crossfire at Baltimore youth football game
A 12-year-old girl was shot and killed during a youth football game at Leon Day Park on North Franklintown Road in Baltimore on Saturday evening, wbal.com reports. Three adults were also wounded in the incident.
Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley said officers were called to the scene at around 6:15 p.m. On arrival, they found a woman and the girl suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were transported to hospital, where the girl was pronounced dead.
Two men subsequently walked into separate hospitals seeking treatment for gunshot wounds. All three adult victims are believed to have sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators believe the shooting began with an argument between two men over a parking space before it escalated into gunfire. Preliminarily, two shooters are believed to have been involved. The number of shots fired has not yet been established.
"The dispute most likely occurred from a stupid parking spot, and they get into a fight, and the two cowards pull guns on each other, and the one fires multiple rounds down range and hits the little girl who most likely was down there by the field," Commissioner Worley said.
Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott described the incident as among the most disturbing he had witnessed. "Two grown men got into an argument, and now a 12-year-old is gone," Scott said. "That baby was just out here, at homecoming for this youth football league — out here every single day, trying to keep young people safe, trying to keep young men and young women on the right path."
Worley called on witnesses to come forward. "Our officers are following multiple leads, but we're urging anyone who may have seen anything to call 911 or Metro Crime Stoppers," he said.
Police closed North Franklintown Road at North Ellamont Street following the shooting. Parents and coaches at the scene confirmed to wbal.com that the shooting occurred during an active youth football match.
