Chicago Police Department (CPD) said the attack occurred at around 11:55 a.m. in the 8600 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue. An adult woman approached the child as she was walking and stabbed her multiple times in the back with a sharp object.

The girl was transported to Comer Children's Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her name has not been released.

Bystanders who witnessed the stabbing intervened and physically detained the suspect before police arrived. The woman sustained minor injuries during the detention and was taken to a hospital as well. She is now in police custody.
