Riverside County pursuit ends at the border after suspect flees south on I-5

A man wanted for grand theft was taken into custody near the U.S.-Mexico border on Tuesday evening following a lengthy police pursuit that began in Jurupa Valley, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department confirmed. abc7.com reported the chase stretched across two counties before ending close to the San Diego border crossing.

Deputies first located the suspect around 6:46 p.m. near Van Buren Boulevard and Clay Street in Jurupa Valley. When they attempted a traffic stop, the man failed to yield and fled, triggering the pursuit.

The chase moved from Jurupa Valley onto the westbound 91 Freeway, then south onto Interstate 15. Riverside Sheriff's Aviation and K9 units joined in as the suspect crossed into San Diego County and continued south on the 5 Freeway.

The pursuit ended near the U.S.-Mexico border, where the suspect was taken into custody.

Witnesses on the scene reported hearing shots fired, and video footage showed officers providing medical assistance to a man who appeared alert. However, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department stated that no deputies were involved in a shooting and that none were injured during the incident.

The California Highway Patrol also confirmed it was not involved in any shooting. CHP said it responded solely to assist with traffic control, with southbound 5 Freeway traffic near Camino de la Plaza diverted toward the Port of Entry.

The investigation is ongoing and no further details were immediately available.
