Dallas suspect beats officer with ghost gun after stolen Corvette spotted in Silver Spring
A 23-year-old man from Dallas struck a Montgomery County police officer in the head with a firearm during a stolen vehicle investigation in Silver Spring, Maryland, late Monday, nbcwashington.com reports.
Officers spotted a stolen Chevrolet Corvette travelling southbound on New Hampshire Avenue shortly before 11 p.m. They followed the vehicle until it pulled into a driveway in the 900 block of Hollywood Avenue, where two individuals stepped out and entered a nearby home.
As a plainclothes officer approached the parked Corvette, Isaiah Armstrong-Smith walked out of the home carrying what police described as a "privately manufactured firearm" — commonly known as a ghost gun — and struck the officer in the head with it.
Smith fled when additional officers arrived but was apprehended in the 900 block of Winhall Way with the help of a K-9 unit and a police helicopter. Detectives later recovered the discarded weapon in the 1000 block of Hollywood Avenue.
A second suspect, a 22-year-old Silver Spring resident, was arrested at the original scene. Police believe he had been driving the stolen Corvette, but he was subsequently released pending further investigation.
Smith has been charged with first-degree assault, possession of a stolen vehicle, and multiple firearms-related offences. He is being held without bond.
The Corvette had been reported stolen from Anne Arundel County on 1 October.
