Oakland Suspect Used Shoe-Mounted Cameras to Film Women and Minors Near UC Berkeley
Noah Stein, 35, of Oakland, was arrested October 30 on multiple charges after allegedly concealing cameras inside his shoes to secretly record women and minors in the Berkeley area, the Berkeley Police Department has confirmed. NY Post Metro reports that the investigation also uncovered a second hidden recording device planted inside a restaurant near UC Berkeley.
The case began October 26, when a teenage girl told police that a man may have been filming up her skirt while she waited in line at Lox Stock and Bagel, located at 2043 Allston Way near downtown Berkeley. The teen said she had accidentally stepped on the man's foot and noticed a camera pointed toward her.
Detectives collected evidence from the scene and identified a possible suspect. Investigators used Automated License Plate Reader technology to help place Stein in the area at the time of the alleged incident.
A significant break came early Friday morning, October 30, when an officer patrolling the south side of the UC Berkeley campus was approached by a witness who reported seeing a man with a camera attached to his shoe, apparently recording up women's skirts. Officers located and detained the suspect. During a search of the surrounding area, police recovered a mini camera that had been discarded in a nearby trash can.
Investigators subsequently obtained a search warrant for Stein's Oakland residence and seized several electronic devices. Detectives also discovered a stationary camera allegedly concealed inside the Taco Bell Cantina near campus, placed there on October 29.
Stein now faces numerous charges, including invasion of privacy using a concealed video recording device, annoying or molesting a minor, and destruction of evidence.
Authorities believe Stein may have been frequenting the UC Berkeley South Campus area for several weeks and may have secretly recorded additional victims. Police are urging anyone who was inside the Taco Bell Cantina after 11 p.m. on the night of October 29, believes they may have been recorded, or has information about the suspect to contact the Berkeley Police Department's Sex Crimes Unit at 510-981-5735.
