Henderson gunman fires over 200 rounds before SWAT officers shoot him dead
Henderson police have released video footage and new details of an officer-involved shooting that left a 48-year-old man dead following an hours-long standoff near Eastern Avenue on Saturday, 3 October, fox5vegas.com reports.
The suspect, Ropati Tauiliili, was pronounced dead at the scene after two SWAT officers opened fire simultaneously. HPD Deputy Chief Marcos Aguirre confirmed both officers struck Tauiliili.
Domestic disturbance triggers the chain of events
The incident began at approximately 3:45 p.m., when Henderson officers were dispatched to a home in the 2000 block of Club Crest Way, near Warm Springs Road and Green Valley Parkway, following a report of a domestic disturbance. Investigators determined Tauiliili had entered the property through the backyard, assaulted several family members, pointed a firearm at them, and fled before officers arrived.
Just after 8:00 p.m., Henderson dispatch received multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire in the area. Responding officers found an adult woman with two gunshot wounds; she was transported to a local hospital and later released.
Tauiliili's niece had called 911 shortly before the shooting began. "He hit me in the face multiple times. He also hit my boyfriend in the face multiple times. And pointed the rifle at us," she told the dispatcher.
Suspect signals his intentions to employer
At some point during the standoff, Tauiliili contacted his employer via text message and a recorded phone call, stating he had shot at family members, refused to return to prison, and intended to force a fatal confrontation with law enforcement, Aguirre said.
In audio captured during that call, Tauiliili outlined his plan clearly. "I'm just waiting for the police to show up... I'm gonna shoot it out... I'm gonna make them shoot me," he said.
Tauiliili had previously served approximately 15 years in prison following a 1997 murder conviction in Hawaii.
Standoff in a Las Vegas cemetery
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officers, supported by LVMPD air and drone units, located Tauiliili inside a cul-de-sac at a cemetery near Eastern Avenue. Officers from Henderson police, Metro, and the Clark County Office of Public Safety established a perimeter and closed surrounding roadways.
According to police, Tauiliili fired his rifle for approximately one hour in multiple directions, targeting responding officers, bystanders, police aircraft, drones, and nearby structures. A civilian vehicle was struck; the driver retreated safely. A witness who called 911 estimated hearing 15 to 20 gunshots before the full exchange of fire took place. More than 200 rifle casings were ultimately recovered from the scene.
Two SWAT officers end the standoff
Two members of Metro's SWAT team fired simultaneously, both striking the suspect. Radio traffic captured the moment: "Shots fired by Metro Sierra, suspect is down."
The officers were identified as Julian Diaz, a full-time SWAT officer with the department since 2019, and Thomas Whitney, a patrol officer and part-time SWAT member, also with the department since 2019. It was the first officer-involved shooting for both. Aguirre confirmed they have been placed on routine paid administrative leave pending the investigation.
No police officers or bystanders were injured during the standoff. Investigators recovered more than 130 shell casings from the immediate crime scene. What initially triggered Tauiliili's behaviour on the evening of 3 October remains unclear, police said.
The incident marks the Henderson Police Department's third officer-involved shooting of 2026 and its second fatal shooting of the year.
