Lowell Man Indicted for Manslaughter After Fatal High-Speed Crash in Boston

A 23-year-old Lowell man has been indicted on manslaughter charges following a high-speed, head-on collision on the Jamaicaway last month that killed an unborn child and injured several people, nbcboston.com reports.

Luis Bermudez Torres was travelling at 103 mph — in a zone with a posted speed limit of 25 mph — when he lost control of his vehicle and struck a pregnant woman's car on Monday, 17 August, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office. The crash occurred as Bermudez Torres fled the scene of a separate collision.

A grand jury indicted Bermudez Torres on Friday. He was arrested Monday morning in Boxford and held on $50,000 bail, with a court hearing scheduled for 2 November. Conditions of his release prohibit him from driving. It was not immediately clear whether he had legal representation.

In addition to manslaughter, Bermudez Torres faces charges of reckless motor vehicle homicide and assault and battery with a deadly weapon.

The expecting mother, 39, sustained a fractured wrist and blunt-force injuries. Bermudez Torres and his girlfriend, who was a passenger in his vehicle, were also injured. The passenger in the pregnant woman's car was uninjured.

Prosecutors said the sequence of events began after Bermudez Torres and his girlfriend left an event at Franklin Field around 10 p.m. While driving toward Boston, he struck another vehicle at an intersection, then sped away — ultimately losing control and causing the fatal collision.
