Suspect identified after fatal officer-involved shooting in Downtown Portland
Portland police have identified the man killed in an officer-involved shooting on 15 October 2026 as Eric J. Hurtado, 36. According to portland.gov, his family has been notified of his death.
The incident began at 4:34 p.m., when Central Precinct officers were dispatched to reports of an assault in the 700 block of Southwest Alder Street. Officers arrived at the 400 block of Southwest Broadway approximately three minutes later and found an assault in progress. An officer fired shots, striking the suspect.
Officers immediately began applying trauma first aid to Hurtado while paramedics made their way to the scene. He was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where he later died despite lifesaving efforts.
Two adult male victims were also taken by ambulance to a local hospital. Their injuries were described as serious but not life-threatening, and both are expected to recover. A box cutter with a broken blade was recovered at the scene.
No officers were injured in the incident.
Chief Bob Day, who responded to the scene, addressed the shooting in a statement. "Officers interrupted a violent attack in progress, and I'm gratified to hear that the victims are going to recover," he said. "I'm grateful to our police officers and other first responders who are asked to respond to the most dangerous and urgent emergencies we have. I'm saddened by the events here in Downtown Portland as a man died, and any loss of life is a tragedy for our community."
Day added that the Detective Division was working to establish a full picture of what occurred. Multnomah County District Attorney Nathan Vasquez also responded to the scene. Mayor Keith Wilson and City Administrator Raymond C. Lee were briefed on the incident.
The Portland Police Bureau's Homicide Unit is leading the investigation. Detectives believe the victims and the suspect were not known to each other prior to the attack. Investigators have indicated that community members — some of whom may have video footage — witnessed the incident or the events leading up to it but have not yet spoken with police. Those individuals are asked to contact [email protected] and cite case number 26-301198.
As part of standard use-of-force review procedures, the Bureau will conduct an internal review covering the initial response, tactics used, resources requested, and actions taken after the shooting. The case will be referred to the Police Review Board, which includes community members, Bureau personnel, and representatives from the Independent Police Review Division.
Once the investigation and any legal proceedings are concluded, investigative files and any grand jury transcripts related to the case will be published on the Bureau's Open Data page.
