Fatal police shooting in Moonachie under state attorney general investigation

A man was shot dead by a New Jersey State trooper on Wednesday afternoon and found in a crashed vehicle on West Commercial Avenue in the industrial district of Moonachie, abc7ny.com reports. The incident took place at approximately 5:15 p.m.

Eyewitnesses described an unexpectedly heavy police presence in an area they characterised as ordinarily quiet. Roberto Maldonado, who had just finished his shift at a nearby workplace, said he and a colleague came upon a Kia Soul that had crashed into a concrete wall outside a food warehouse.

"One guy is on the floor and the police arrest. Coming 20, 30 police — move, move, move! The other guy is in the car... shot," Maldonado said.

Sources told Eyewitness News the man sustained a gunshot wound to the neck. Blood was visible on the vehicle's airbag, and the driver's door was found open.

Angel Burns, employed in the area, said the incident left her shaken. "Every night I pass here. I see mad police. I really don't know what happened, but somebody told me somebody got shot. That's really, really scaring me. It's a quiet area," Burns said.

Several unmarked police vehicles had been following the driver prior to the crash, according to authorities, who have not disclosed what prompted the encounter. It remains unclear whether the man was armed, whether he was the subject of an active investigation, or whether any additional individuals were taken into custody.

Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) agents responded to the scene alongside state and local law enforcement. The New Jersey State Police Weapons Trafficking Unit was also present.

The New Jersey attorney general's office is leading the investigation into the police-involved shooting, in line with standard protocol for such incidents. Authorities have not released the name of the man who was killed or the identity of the trooper who fired the shot.
