Glendale man killed after firing at SWAT officers through front door

Newly released bodycam footage and 911 recordings shed light on a fatal police standoff that took place on 12 August at a home on Nicolet Avenue in Glendale, Arizona, according to azfamily.com.

Jeffery Peters, 59, had been served an order of protection barring him from the property and from possessing firearms or ammunition. Police said he violated that order and was trespassing when the incident began.

Peters' adult daughter, who lived at the address, called 911 saying she feared for her life. "I have an order of protection, and I have somebody in my house trying to kill me," she told a dispatcher. "He's my dad, and he's going to kill me if I pull into this driveway alone."

Officers arriving at the scene found the daughter parked nearby. They noted prior contacts with Peters and that he may have been experiencing a mental health crisis. Glendale police called in its SWAT team to attempt a peaceful resolution.

Once SWAT arrived, Peters began firing at officers through the front door. "Shooting out the front door!" an officer is heard saying over the radio. The bodycam footage captures what sounds like an exchange of gunfire between Peters and police.

Peters also called 911 during the standoff, telling a dispatcher he was heavily armed. "There's cops at my front door, they're tearing down my house!" he said. Asked whether he was armed, he replied, "For my protection, yes," and stated he would not surrender his weapons.

The gunfire continued for a period before stopping. Officers deployed a drone inside the home and found Peters dead. No officers sustained serious injuries during the hours-long confrontation.

The shooting remains under review.
