Calvert County man held without bond after allegedly confessing to sister's shooting death
A 43-year-old Maryland man who allegedly told deputies "I shot someone" and "I did it" will face a competency hearing before his murder trial can proceed, fox5dc.com reports.
Troy Elliott Harrod, of Huntingtown, was found standing in his driveway on Harvey Road just after 5 a.m. on Monday, according to the Calvert County Sheriff's Office. When deputies arrived, they discovered his sister, Alva, 55, lying on a bed inside the home with multiple gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene, one day after her 55th birthday.
Harrod told officers he acted because "they were trying to take my house," according to police.
A family member, speaking off camera, confirmed that the two siblings shared the Harvey Road residence. Alva's family described her as having had a successful career at M&T Bank in Dunkirk.
Also present in the home at the time of the shooting was Alva's daughter, Dalya. She reportedly barricaded herself in her room and called 911 after hearing multiple gunshots and her mother screaming. Dalya told deputies that Harrod is a severe alcoholic and may have been experiencing a severe schizophrenic episode at the time, according to a police report.
Harrod has been charged with first- and second-degree murder and is being held without bond. A judge is scheduled to hold a competency hearing on October 23 to determine whether Harrod is fit to stand trial.
Court records show no prior history of violence in Maryland, though Harrod pleaded guilty to a DWI charge in Calvert County in 2018.
