National Guard troops exchange gunfire in Washington DC, one soldier wounded
A National Guard member was shot in the leg during a late-night incident in Washington DC, after troops intervened to break up a nearby fight, abcnews.com reports.
The Metropolitan Police Department said early on Monday that officers responded on Sunday night to reports of a shooting near the 400 block of 8th Street SE involving National Guard personnel.
According to police, the Guard members had stepped in to break up a fight in the area when one of the individuals involved allegedly drew a weapon and opened fire.
"National Guard immediately gave commands to that individual to put down the gun. That individual then pointed the weapon towards National Guard members, who returned fire to the individual," D.C. Interim Police Chief Jeffery W. Carroll said.
Three Guard members on the scene returned fire after one of their colleagues was struck, hitting the suspect in the abdomen, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
Both the wounded soldier and the suspect who allegedly fired the weapon were taken to local hospitals in Washington DC. Police confirmed that neither person sustained life-threatening injuries.
The Metropolitan Police Department said the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
