NYPD Detective Cheered Out of Bronx Hospital After Seven-Stab Attack
Det. Jose Mercedes walked out of Jacobi Medical Center in Morris Park on Monday evening to bagpipes, salutes, and applause from dozens of fellow officers, NY Post Metro reports. The 10-year NYPD veteran had been hospitalized after being stabbed and slashed seven times during an off-duty robbery in the Bronx last Friday.
Mercedes, who works out of the 44th Precinct, was clearing out the trunk of his car in Norwood when two suspects on an e-bike attempted to snatch his gold chain, according to officials. He resisted, and the pair stabbed him multiple times before tearing the chain from his neck.
Video footage from the scene captured Mercedes bleeding heavily before he was transported to Jacobi Medical Center. By Monday, he was well enough to leave — and made a point of rising from his wheelchair and flashing a thumbs-up at the crowd of officers gathered to greet him.
As of Monday, his two attackers remain at large, police said.
