ICE agent hospitalised after assault on elderly Fresno residents ends in shooting

A 32-year-old federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent is in custody at a Fresno hospital after being shot in the early hours of Friday morning, abc7chicago.com reports. Police say the shooting followed an unprovoked attack on a 72-year-old man and his adult daughter at their home in central Fresno.

The incident began before 3:30 am when the woman discovered David Gonzalez asleep on her front lawn. She alerted her father, who went outside to ask Gonzalez to leave. When Gonzalez was woken, the Fresno Police Department says he appeared to be drunk and immediately assaulted the elderly man.

The woman attempted to intervene to protect her father, at which point Gonzalez physically attacked her as well. Fearing for their safety, the 72-year-old drew a firearm and shot Gonzalez. The woman's boyfriend — an off-duty police officer — subsequently arrived at the scene and placed Gonzalez in handcuffs until authorities arrived.

Gonzalez was transported to hospital and is listed in serious condition. He is now facing a charge of felony assault. The 72-year-old man who fired the shot is not facing any criminal charges.

Authorities confirmed that Gonzalez is a federal agent based in Texas, assigned to ICE. Investigators are still working to determine why he was in the neighbourhood where the shooting occurred.

Fresno City Councilmember Mike Karbassi issued a statement in response to the incident. "Enough is enough," Karbassi said. "We've endured days of fear-stricken enforcement that has now tilted into full-bore violence. I am calling on ICE to suspend its ongoing operations in the Central Valley."
