Jamaica extradition ends year-long pursuit in Michigan child sexual assault case

A 31-year-old man extradited from Jamaica is now in custody in Michigan, facing seven criminal charges connected to alleged sexual offences against a child under the age of 16, upnorthlive.com reports.

Officers from the Mackinaw City Police Department took Romario Barnes into custody on 30 September at Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids, following the execution of a felony warrant.

The extradition was secured with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service and required coordination between the U.S. and Jamaican court systems. Police said the process took more than a year to complete.

Barnes faces three counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, three counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, and one count of accosting a minor. The alleged incidents took place more than three years ago and involved a victim younger than 16.

The Cheboygan County Prosecutor's Office, the U.S. Department of Justice Office of International Affairs, and the U.S. Marshals all assisted in the case, according to the Mackinaw City Police Department.
