Seattle murder suspect caught in Chicago after Belltown gas station killing
According to spdblotter.seattle.gov, Michael Oneal Fleming — wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of a convenience store employee in Seattle — was taken into custody in Chicago, Illinois, by United States Marshals Service without incident.
The arrest follows a killing that took place in the early morning hours of 13 October at a 76 gas station on 351 Broad Street, near the Belltown neighbourhood. Officers were called to the scene at 5:52 a.m. after reports of an unresponsive man inside the store. They found the 36-year-old victim — a store clerk — behind the counter with gunshot wounds. Seattle Fire Department medics pronounced him dead at the scene.
Investigators determined that a suspect dressed entirely in black entered the store, approached the counter, shot the clerk, and left on foot. No motive has been publicly established.
Fleming, 33, was subsequently identified as the suspect. Seattle Police detectives had described him as a Black male with a heavy build, approximately 5'8" tall. At the time of the shooting he was wearing a black hoodie, black coat, black pants, and a black cross-body bag. Authorities had warned the public not to approach him, characterising him as armed and dangerous.
Interim Chief Sayles, Assistant Chief Brown, Assistant Chief Powell, and detectives from the Homicide/Assault Unit and Crime Scene Investigation Unit all responded to the original scene. The investigation was logged under incident number 2026-305599, West Precinct, Q3.
Fleming's arrest in Chicago brings the active public search to a close. No further details regarding the circumstances of the Chicago arrest were immediately available.
