Michigan Man Shoots Mother, Calls Father to Report Broken-Down Car
A 30-year-old Michigan man has been charged with open murder after allegedly shooting his mother inside her Algoma Township home, then fleeing the scene and leaving his father a voicemail that made no mention of the killing, according to Law & Crime.
Ryan Hansen faces charges of open murder and felony firearms possession in connection with the death of 56-year-old Diane Kimar-Luman, a retired elementary school teacher. Court documents obtained by local NBC affiliate WOOD and CBS affiliate WWMT detail the events of the morning of Oct. 15.
Hansen had been living with Kimar-Luman and her husband, Wayne Luman, for roughly two weeks following his eviction. A family member told police that Hansen had not spoken with his mother for several years before moving in, and that when under the influence of drugs he would refer to her as "evil." Police said Hansen harbored a longstanding grudge against her over alleged wrongdoings during his childhood.
Several relatives told investigators that Hansen was planning to "live off grid" and distrusted the government. He reportedly carried a black handgun with him at all times and owned "a number of guns." Despite the tension, Kimar-Luman and her husband had accepted his plans and were providing him with food and financial support as he prepared to leave.
On the morning of the shooting, Hansen was last seen by his brother in the kitchen with their mother at around 8:30 a.m. When the brother moved to another part of the house, he heard loud noises he would later identify as gunshots, followed by someone repeatedly crying out, "Oh my God."
Wayne Luman heard the shots at approximately 9:15 a.m. and rushed to the kitchen, where he found Kimar-Luman on the floor with gunshot wounds. Luman called 911 and kept the victim's other son from entering the kitchen. Kimar-Luman was pronounced dead at the scene. Luman told police he then saw Hansen drive away in a blue Chevrolet Suburban.
After fleeing, Hansen borrowed a stranger's phone and called his father, Derrick Hansen, leaving a voicemail that said: "Hey, I don't know what's going on this morning. My phone's dead. I broke down. Give me a call." Derrick Hansen told WOOD that by the time he heard the message, he had already learned of his ex-wife's death — and that his son had sounded "super calm."
Derrick Hansen warned the phone's owner to stay away from his son for her own safety. At around 10:30 a.m., he placed his own 911 call once he established where Ryan's car had broken down.
Officers responding to that location found Ryan Hansen loading belongings into a taxi. With the driver's consent, police searched the vehicle and recovered a holstered Glock 17, a two-slot magazine holder with one magazine missing, and a safe in the trunk containing an AK-47 rifle.
Ryan Hansen is being held at the Kent County Correctional Facility. His next court date is scheduled for Oct. 28.
