Villages Resident Charged After Hammering Surgeon's Tesla Over Canceled Surgeries
A 78-year-old Florida man allegedly took a hammer to his orthopedic surgeon's Tesla after having his surgery canceled twice for drinking water before the procedure, Law & Crime reports.
Glen Lee Ong, of The Villages, faces a charge of criminal mischief property damage following the Sept. 16 incident at the Optimotion Orthopedics medical building in Wildwood.
According to a probable cause arrest affidavit, Wildwood police were called to the facility around 3:30 p.m., where they found the doctor's 2023 Tesla with two "indentations" on the windshield. Staff had alerted the doctor after hearing two "loud bangs" outside.
Surveillance footage showed a man in a surgical-style mask approaching the vehicle with a hammer, striking the windshield twice, then walking back to his truck and driving off. The damage was estimated at approximately $1,600.
Officers identified Ong as the suspect after reviewing the footage. When police visited him at his home, Ong initially denied being the doctor's patient. "You got the wrong person," he told officers. But when confronted with surveillance images of his truck, Ong admitted to the vandalism.
He did not hold back about his motives. "That guy screwed me over twice," Ong told police. "I was already dressed up to do the surgery, and he called it off just because I had a sip of water." Ong maintained that the surgery could have proceeded despite his having drunk water, adding: "I went through all that trouble going down there, having someone take me down there and that f—er turned me down."
Police wrote in the affidavit that Ong stated the doctor "needed to be held accountable for his actions" and that he "wanted to teach the victim a lesson." The doctor described Ong to investigators as a "difficult patient."
Ong also told officers he had removed his license plate before striking the Tesla in an effort to avoid identification.
He was arrested on Oct. 9 and booked into the Sumter County Jail, where he posted bond the following day. His next court date is scheduled for Nov. 3.
