Manhunt Underway After Fatal Shooting at Spirit Halloween in Fairfield

A shooter killed one person and wounded six others inside a Spirit Halloween store at the Solano Town Center mall in Fairfield, California, on Friday night at approximately 8:30 p.m. local time, nbcnews.com reports.

Fairfield Police Department Chief Dan Marshall told reporters at a news conference that at least three of the victims were "currently in critical condition." All victims were transported to a nearby hospital. Marshall said detectives were "diligently working to identify the suspect or suspects responsible for this horrific shooting."

David Bernal told NBC News affiliate KCRA that his wife was inside the store when the gunfire broke out. She escaped through an emergency exit along with several other customers. "She's at home right now, still in shock," Bernal said, adding that she described hearing "five big bangs, big ones, like loud" before fleeing to the other side of the mall.

The Fairfield shooting came hours after a separate and apparently unrelated fatal incident at another Spirit Halloween location, this one in Madison Heights, Michigan. According to a news release from the Madison Heights Police Department, a 21-year-old Detroit resident sustained serious gunshot injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he later died.

The alleged shooter in the Michigan incident, also 21 years old, was taken into custody after sustaining non-life-threatening injuries when several bystanders intervened. "Based on the evidence gained thus far, investigators anticipate seeking criminal charges in this case," the Madison Heights department said.

Authorities stressed that the two shootings at Spirit Halloween stores — one in California, one in Michigan — do not appear to be connected.
