Burlington Police Nab Two Attempted Murder Suspects After Automated Plate Alert
Burlington police arrested two men on 25 September 2026 after an automated licence plate reader flagged a vehicle connected to an attempted murder investigation in Mecklenburg County, abc45.com reports.
The alert reached the Burlington Police Department at 1 p.m., identifying a vehicle sought by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department in relation to the attempted murder case. Officers then launched a coordinated surveillance operation involving multiple police units, a Drone as First Responder programme, and the department's Aerial Reconnaissance Tactical Intelligence Center.
Once the vehicle was located, officers carried out what the department described as a coordinated containment operation and took both suspects into custody. During the operation, two firearms in plain view, an open alcohol container, and marijuana were seized.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police responded to the scene and assisted by formally charging the two men.
Clifford Nathaniel Hayden IV, 22, faces felony attempted first-degree murder, felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, misdemeanor simple possession of marijuana, and felony possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The second suspect, identified as Mills, faces felony attempted first-degree murder and felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.
Both Hayden and Mills were transported to the Alamance County Detention Center, where each was held without bond given the violent nature of the charges.
"Initial bonds are set by a Judicial Official and are subject to modification at any time by order of the Court," the Burlington Police Department said in a statement.
