First suspect arrested in 2017 Simi Valley masked rape cold case
Ventura County investigators have made the first arrest in a near-decade-old cold case involving a group of men who raped a woman while wearing Ghostface masks from the horror franchise "Scream," latimes.com reports.
Ricardo Jimenez-Garcia, 39, was arrested last month in connection with the attack that took place on 21 September 2017 in Simi Valley, according to a news release from the Ventura County District Attorney's Office. The victim was walking to work at approximately 4 a.m. when she was assaulted; she told police that the men had wielded a knife.
Court records show Jimenez-Garcia faces charges of rape and sodomy. He has pleaded not guilty.
The District Attorney's Office did not disclose what new evidence or developments led to the arrest, almost ten years after the original attack. Prosecutors have, however, called on the public to come forward with any additional information about Jimenez-Garcia, the attack itself, or anyone who may have been similarly victimised.
