Second rape arrest at Wichita State University in less than a month
A 19-year-old Wichita State University freshman was charged with rape on Saturday after being taken into custody at an on-campus dormitory in Kansas, nypost.com reports. James Vandenberg appeared to smile in his mugshot as he was booked at Sedgwick County Jail, where he was held on a $100,000 bond before being released.
No additional details about the alleged assault were immediately available.
The arrest marks the second on-campus rape charge at WSU in less than a month. Earlier in October, student Aaron Christian was arrested by campus police on charges of aggravated domestic battery and rape.
Following Christian's arrest, Wichita State University Director of Communication Lainie Mazzullo-Hart told local broadcaster KWCH that the institution, which enrols more than 18,000 students, "takes all reports of sexual assault seriously."
"Sexual violence has no place in any campus community, and we are committed to following all applicable laws, reporting, investigative and student-support processes," Mazzullo-Hart said in a statement.
The university did not respond to a request for comment from The Post. The cases were first reported by The Sunflower, the WSU student newspaper.
