UAE airports intercept 300kg of narcotics in less than two months

UAE security authorities have dismantled 14 separate attempts to smuggle narcotics through the country's airports in fewer than two months, seizing more than 300kg of drugs in total, thenationalnews.com reports.

The operations were conducted jointly by the National Anti-Narcotics Agency and the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security, through its General Directorate of Port Security. State news agency WAM attributed the results to coordinated intelligence efforts.

Several suspects from countries in Europe and Asia were arrested in connection with the operations. Prior to their arrival, intelligence on suspicious consignments and travel routes was shared between agencies, allowing specialist teams to act immediately once flights and shipments landed at UAE airports.

UAE Customs said advanced technical detection systems and smart screening technology were used to identify substances concealed within baggage and transit consignments — in many cases without the need for manual inspections. The authority noted that these systems had reduced inspection times whilst simultaneously increasing detection rates for sophisticated concealment methods.

The announcement follows an earlier operation also reported by thenationalnews.com, in which UAE Customs intercepted 16.2kg of crystal methamphetamine hidden inside a vehicle tyre at a border crossing.
