Argentine security forces thwarted an attempted assault on two bank branches in the Buenos Aires province, where an organisation of twelve individuals had planned to access armoured vaults through tunnels dug from adjoining buildings.
The operation was carried out the previous Sunday. After receiving a report, officers from the Buenos Aires Police and Federal Police intervened to neutralise the heist before it was executed.
According to information from Argentine media, among the members of the group is a former Federal Police officer with a criminal record and a man from Uruguay whose speciality is tunnel opening. The latter is said to have been hired for his technical knowledge in underground excavations.
The criminals' targets were two financial establishments located in Morón and Baradero. The strategy consisted of drilling from neighbouring buildings to reach the bulletproof zones of the banks, where they expected to steal gold bars, dollars and the contents of safety deposit boxes.
During this week, experts will continue working to determine at what stage the preparation of the crime was at and whether there is any connection between this gang and other networks engaged in similar robbery methods.
