A 34-year-old man was arrested in the city of Córdoba last Monday, accused of being part of a gang dedicated to stealing valuables from vehicles parked on public roads, eldoce.tv reported.
The investigation began in April in Junín, Buenos Aires Province, following a series of crimes against vehicles. According to police sources, members of the group forced open locks with screwdrivers to steal belongings from inside the automobiles.
The inquiries led investigators to Córdoba capital, where three raids were carried out in the Observatorio and Alta Córdoba neighbourhoods. Personnel from the Judicial Department of Junín acted jointly with the Córdoba Police to locate the suspect.
During the procedure at the detainee's residence, security forces seized more than $60 million in cash, a firearm with numerous cartridges, an automobile, mobile telephones and other items of interest to the case. Among the objects found were screwdrivers that were believed to have been used to force open the vehicles. The confiscated pistol was believed to have been previously stolen from a police officer in Buenos Aires.
Investigators suspect that the gang may also have operated in provinces such as La Pampa, Río Negro and Neuquén, committing similar crimes in different localities.
The authorities highlighted the coordinated work between provincial and inter-provincial forces as key to the success of the operation.
