In Cañuelas, in the province of Buenos Aires, a celebration for football ended fatally. Franco Depauli, aged 46, received a severe blunt force impact to the skull from a stone whilst gathering in the streets to celebrate the Argentine national team's victory. The incident occurred in the city centre, where supporters typically congregate.
Police sources indicated that the victim became caught in the middle of a dispute between several people who were celebrating. Following the blow, relatives rushed him to Ángel Marzetti medical centre, but doctors determined he had arrived deceased, with severe head trauma.
Based on an examination of security footage from the area, officers managed to identify the alleged assailant. Subsequently, with an order from the corresponding prosecutor's office, officers from the local first police station proceeded to arrest Iván Nahuel Lebrero, aged 20, who is attributed with having thrown the stone during the commotion.
The youth, who had a prior criminal record, was placed at the disposal of the courts in a case involving simple homicide. Investigations are continuing with the gathering of evidence to establish the details of the incident.
