A 30-year-old man identified as Jonathan Pinto was fatally stabbed in Añelo, province of Neuquén, following a dispute that started in a bar where he was watching the Argentine national team match on 7 July. Authorities detained the main suspect, whose initials are V.A.C., and continue to search for a second person involved in the assault.
According to the reconstruction by the case prosecutor, Eugenia Titanti, Pinto was in the establishment with his partner and a group of friends. During the sporting event, the future assailant began to harass the victim's girlfriend, which sparked a verbal confrontation with one of Pinto's companions. As tensions escalated, the group decided to leave the venue.
However, Pinto returned to the bar minutes later. At that point, the attacker and an accomplice were waiting for him in ambush on the pavement. The detainee wounded him with a sharp weapon, whilst his associate struck him as he lay on the ground.
The prosecutor explained that the victim, seriously wounded, managed to move several metres away to a corner, where he collapsed. He died almost immediately as a result of massive thoracic haemorrhage caused by a stab wound that pierced his heart. In addition to that fatal injury, Pinto had six other cutting and puncture wounds on his head, thorax and hands.
After the attack, both assailants fled in a motor vehicle. Minutes later, when the main suspect returned to the bar, police officers apprehended him. The second person involved in the assault remains at large.
At the charge confirmation hearing, the prosecutor requested six months of remand in custody for the accused, arguing risk of flight and possible obstruction of the investigation. The judge of guarantees Juan Pablo Encina upheld the charges, set a four-month period for investigation and granted remand in custody for the required period.
