Federal Police officers arrested a 48-year-old Mexican citizen in the lobby of a hotel in the exclusive Buenos Aires neighbourhood of Puerto Madero. The man had an international arrest warrant activated by INTERPOL at the request of United States authorities.
The apprehension was carried out on Friday evening at the accommodation located at Avenida Macacha Güemes, number 300. The operation was organised following a joint alert between the State Intelligence Secretariat (SIDE), the National Migration Directorate and Federal Police, who detected that the subject had crossed the Argentine border on 8 July, arriving from Mexican territory.
According to reporting by Diario Nuevo Día, SIDE confirmed that the individual was being pursued by the Northern District Court of Illinois. The charges he faces are linked to the possession, distribution and sale of more than ten kilograms of cocaine, with an estimated value of 285 thousand dollars, within an investigation that began in 2016.
The foreigner had been released on bail, but broke the conditions established by the court in 2017, which prompted the arrest warrant. From that date he remained in hiding. The capture request was processed through the Washington National Central Bureau.
Currently, the detainee is in custody awaiting his possible extradition. The case is being handled by Federal Court Number 5, presided over by magistrate María Eugenia Capuchetti, with assistance from the secretariat under Leandro Noguera.
