The Police of Investigations (PDI) detained a man and a woman on Monday—a couple with criminal records—in connection with the homicide of a 19-year-old man committed in the early hours of 12 July at the intersection of Gorriti and Bayo in the city of Santa Fe. According to ellitoral.com, the operation included three simultaneous raids and the seizure of a .32 calibre firearm, two mobile telephones and a motorcycle that allegedly was used to flee the crime scene.
Both detainees were placed at the disposal of the Public Prosecutor's Office. The next step will be the hearing for charging, where the prosecution will have to specify the crimes attributed to them and the evidence supporting the accusation.
Months of work by the Homicide Division
The director of Criminal Investigation, Rolando Galfrascoli, highlighted the sustained work of the PDI's Homicide Division alongside homicide prosecutor Carlos Lacuadra. "It was a tremendously tragic event that shook all of Santa Fe and the Argentine Republic," said Galfrascoli, who described the investigation as the result of "months and months of work" that resulted in "a solid edifice of evidence".
The head of Homicide, Cristian Nagel, explained that progress in the case was supported by interviews with eyewitnesses to the incident. "It was achieved through interviews we were able to conduct with witnesses to the fact," said Nagel, who added that the items seized during the procedures would be incorporated into the case file.
The crime occurred in the context of celebrations following a match by the Argentine national team. Galfrascoli also stressed that the level of violence deployed that early morning "could have caused even greater consequences" beyond the death of the young man.
The raids on Monday allowed, according to the official, corroboration of some of the information gathered during the investigation. It will now be up to the courts to determine the degree of responsibility of each of the accused.
Woman with severe burns in the Santa Rosa de Lima neighbourhood
In parallel with the proceedings for the homicide, the PDI intervened in another episode of violence recorded during the morning of the same Monday in the Santa Rosa de Lima neighbourhood, also in Santa Fe.
A woman suffered severe burns and a man was injured in circumstances that are still under investigation. Nagel confirmed that the gender affairs division of the Police of Investigations took action to clarify what occurred.
Upon the arrival of firefighters and police officers at the scene, the man was attempting to extinguish the flames on the woman with a hose. "Yes, he was trying to extinguish them, attempting to put them out with a water hose," Nagel specified when asked.
The origin of the fire and the exact circumstances of the episode were not officially confirmed. The woman remains hospitalised, whilst the man sustained injuries related to the fire. His procedural status remained pending instructions from the prosecutor involved once initial evidence was gathered.
Inspections at scrapyards in Santo Tomé over cable theft
During the same day, Galfrascoli reported on a series of inspections carried out at scrapyards in the Las Vegas neighbourhood in Santo Tomé, as part of an inter-institutional strategy aimed at combating the theft and marketing of cables and materials belonging to the Provincial Energy Company (EPE).
The controls made it possible to detect material whose legal provenance could not be established, which resulted in administrative action, closures and detentions. The operation involved the participation of the Ministry of Justice and Security, the Registry Secretariat, the PDI, agencies linked to the Environment area and the Municipality of Santo Tomé.
"Every time facts against property occur that involve cable theft, which fundamentally affects the provision of electrical service, the decision is to move very strongly and very quickly," said Galfrascoli.
