A criminal court in La Matanza scheduled for March of next year the start of proceedings into the death of a seven-year-old boy in Ciudad Evita, according to Página/12. The judicial process will take place almost two years after the incident, which shocked public opinion in June 2025.
The accused is a member of the federal security forces who, dressed in civilian clothing, fired shots in the street to counter a robbery. A minor waiting for a bus with his parent died in the incident, as did one of four young people who attempted to approach the officer. Two other robbers were injured.
Surveillance footage showed that at the moment the officer opened fire, the group of robbers was already retreating with their backs turned. The young people did not respond to the aggression and were carrying a replica weapon that could not fire.
The officer remained in custody the night of the incident, which occurred on 4 June 2025, but regained his freedom a month later. Since then he has awaited the proceedings on the street. Former security official Patricia Bullrich had publicly come out to support him, arguing that responsibility lay with the criminals.
The prosecution suggested resolving the case through a simplified procedure, which the boy's family immediately rejected. Now, following the preparatory hearing, it was confirmed that the case will be heard in an ordinary oral trial.
The defendant faces charges of killing one of the robbers with excessive force in self-defence, injuring two others in the same circumstances, and causing the death of the minor through negligence. This last charge replaced the original accusation of wilful homicide, which carried a much harsher sentence. The child's legal representatives contest that reduction and will request harsher sentences during the trial.
In parallel, the three survivors of the attempted robbery are charged with aggravated theft using a replica weapon, although with no connection to the minor's death. Former minister Bullrich had attempted to hold them responsible for that death, but the investigation does not attribute their involvement in that outcome.
