Former police officer shot robber during foiled theft in Gerli
A 71-year-old man, a former sub-officer of the Argentine Federal Police, shot dead one of two assailants who attempted to rob him on Wednesday as he was returning home with his wife to their residence in Gerli, a locality in the Buenos Aires district of Avellaneda. The incident was captured by a surveillance camera in the neighbourhood.
The judicial authorities of the UFI No. 1 of Avellaneda are analysing the case and, according to preliminary accounts, the retired officer is believed to have acted within the scope of self-defence, so no charges against him are being considered at present.
The video reveals the moment when the two criminals, riding a motorcycle, intercepted the couple at the entrance to their home. One of the thieves demanded their belongings and warned: "Don't get yourself killed over money." Upon noticing that the victims were not complying, the second assailant urged his companion: "Shoot him." The ex-police officer's wife struggled with one of them and refused to hand over her handbag.
At one point during the confrontation, the robber shouted at the retired officer: "I'll hurt her." It was then that the 71-year-old former agent took a revolver that his wife was carrying concealed among her clothing and opened fire on both attackers. One of the bullets struck one of the assailants, who ran bleeding down the street before collapsing lifeless metres further on. The retired officer himself recounted after the incident: "I've already brought him down."
Personnel from the 6th Police Station in Gerli arrived at the scene after being alerted by neighbours who reported gunshots. The officers found the body of an individual on the asphalt, already without signs of life. Forensic experts from the area seized a metal imitation of a 9-millimetre calibre firearm found next to the deceased, which was allegedly used to intimidate the couple.
The accomplice of the slain robber fled on the motorcycle towards the district of Lanús and has not yet been located. Investigators are continuing proceedings to clarify all the details of the incident and apprehend the fugitive.
