The crime occurred in the early hours of Sunday, after thousands of people took to the streets to celebrate the national team's triumph. In that Córdoban locality, as in other cities across the country, the euphoria over Argentina's victory translated into massive demonstrations that, in this case, ended with a fatal toll.
Police intervention occurred after the crime was committed. Officers deployed a heavy security presence in the city centre, particularly in the vicinity of Patio Olmos, one of the most popular gathering points for fans.
The incident in Córdoba was not the only serious occurrence of the night. In the City of Buenos Aires, hundreds of people gathered at the Obelisk to celebrate goals by Álvarez and Martínez. After one o'clock in the morning, the situation became tense and clashes broke out between protesters and security forces. Officers advanced along 9 de Julio avenue around four in the morning.
These incidents add to those recorded during previous celebrations. Following the victory over Egypt, clashes with Buenos Aires police had also occurred, in addition to altercations with English fans in recent hours.
