The Neuquén justice system has ordered the imprisonment of an individual accused of responsibility for the death of Jonathan Pinto, an incident that shocked the town of Añelo during the early morning hours of Tuesday, 7 July, when thousands of Argentines were celebrating the national team's triumph over Egypt.
Judge Juan Pablo Encina granted the request of the Public Prosecutor's Office and ordered the deprivation of liberty of the accused for six months. The ruling was based on the existence of procedural risk, particularly the possibility that the suspect might obstruct the investigation or attempt to flee. Investigators believe he had the help of a second individual, who remains at liberty and is the subject of an intense search.
The representative of the Public Prosecutor's Office, Eugenia Titanti, clarified that the fatal encounter took place near eleven at night on Calle 1, at the intersection with Arterias 11 and 13. Earlier, inside a drinking establishment, the now detained man had harassed a woman who was spending the evening with Pinto and his acquaintances. That provocation triggered a physical altercation between the aggressor and one of the victim's friends.
In the face of escalating violence, Pinto and his group opted to leave the place. However, the victim returned several minutes later and was ambushed by the detained man and his companion. On the pavement, the pair of attackers intercepted him and began beating him. Once the young man was on the ground, the accused repeatedly stabbed him with a blade whilst the other man continued striking him.
The judicial official described the consequences of the attack: "The boy, with wounds of extreme gravity, managed to free himself and ran several metres to the corner, where he collapsed and lost his life almost instantly as a result of massive thoracic bleeding caused by a stab wound that pierced his heart." In addition to the fatal injury, Pinto's body bore six additional cutting and puncture wounds to the skull, chest and upper limbs.
Following the assault, the two men escaped in a vehicle. Shortly afterwards, when the main suspect was returning to the bar, police officers apprehended him. The prosecution charged him with intentional homicide.
