An Austrian court sentenced a 14-year-old schoolgirl to eight years imprisonment on Wednesday. The girl had killed a 64-year-old woman at Baumgarten Cemetery in the Penzing district of Vienna in February 2024 with more than 80 stab and cut wounds. The sentence is at the upper limit of the framework prescribed for juveniles. The sentence is final. The convicted girl will be remanded to a secure institution for forensic-psychiatric treatment. The girl told the court that she had taken the woman's life and apologised for it. She had suffered from psychological problems for years. On the day of the crime, she deliberately sought a victim on the cemetery for her murderous fantasies. She did not know the woman. She attacked the elderly woman from behind and inflicted 82 stab and cut wounds on her, primarily to the head and neck area. The woman died at the scene.
Subsequently, the teenager photographed the body and sent the images to friends. She said she wanted to let people know that she was going to prison. She eventually called the police herself.
In court, the girl stated that she consumed violent videos and films about serial killers almost daily. She admitted that this aroused her. On the day of the crime, she felt tense. She stared at the ceiling of her room until midday, took a pocket knife and decided that she had to kill someone. According to her own account, she had purchased the knife a week beforehand in order to injure herself.
The court recognised her confession, cooperation with investigators, her clean criminal record, and the influence of medication at the time of the offence as mitigating circumstances. However, the judge emphasised that the "particularly reprehensible motive" was to be considered an aggravating factor. For this reason, the sentence was set at the upper limit of the permissible range.
At the time of the offence, the girl lived in a socio-psychiatric institution. Psychological problems had afflicted her since her ninth year of life.
