A 48-year-old man who was appointed as legal representative for his 92-year-old grandmother stands accused of embezzling her savings to a significant extent. According to investigators, approximately €11,000 went missing, which was apparently taken from the pensioner and spent by the suspect.
The offence came to light when bills for urgently needed care aids remained unpaid. Officers initially searched for the suspected perpetrator without success – he was difficult to reach and failed to attend police appointments.
Investigators eventually found a way to draw him out: they called him and claimed that an urgent document awaited him. What the 48-year-old did not realise was that the request concealed an arrest warrant issued by the public prosecutor's office. Only when he was already sitting with the officers did he realise that he was to be arrested, police spokesman Markus Dittrich stated.
The suspect was subsequently taken to a detention facility. He has not yet admitted to the charge.
