A total of 575 kilograms of illegal substances have been seized at Vienna-Schwechat Airport so far this year. During inspections, authorities arrested 46 people, of whom 40 were remanded in custody.
According to Regional Police Director Franz Popp, the figures demonstrate how important the airport is as a transport hub and how necessary consistent inspections remain. Through the cooperation of all involved authorities, it is possible to effectively combat international drug trafficking.
A crucial part of investigations involves specially trained narcotics detection dogs. The four-legged helpers assist in locating hidden drugs in luggage, freight, or with travellers.
Compared with the entire year 2025, when 708.35 kilograms of illegal drugs and 102 arrests were recorded, the current figures for the year to date already represent a high level.
