The incident occurred in a municipality in the Villach-Land district. The 42-year-old suspect is alleged to have entered the woman's apartment late in the evening and struck the 36-year-old man with the axe.
The children, who were in the apartment at the time of the incident, remained physically unharmed. The mother was able to bring them to safety and alert the police.
The suspect fled the scene after the incident in a lorry. He was later stopped and arrested by police during a traffic check.
Investigators are treating it as a relationship-related crime. The man is said to have previously acted against the woman on several occasions.
