The Vienna prosecutor's office has appealed against the verdict in the case of former BVT chief inspector Egisto Ott. A jury court at Vienna's Regional Criminal Court has unanimously convicted the former official of the Federal Office for Constitutional Protection and Counter-Terrorism of espionage and abuse of office.
The judges imposed a custodial sentence of four years and one month. This is close to the maximum penalty for espionage, which stands at five years. Nevertheless, the prosecutor's office is of the view that the sentence is too lenient.
The appeal filed aims exclusively at increasing the length of imprisonment, not at overturning the guilty verdicts.
